The Empty Space Within

George steps into the subconscious. It's a vast, hollow darkness. Far off, the shapes of Steve's wife, brother, and son stand like grey statues—drained of all color and life.
GeorgeSteve, why are you hiding in the dark? Why have you shut everything out?
SteveBecause I'm terrified.
GeorgeTerrified of what, Steve?
Steve goes silent, his eyes going blank like he's just given up entirely.
A sudden crack of light cuts through the dark. A woman's silhouette—Lily—appears in the doorway.
Lily (Projection)It's not death he's scared of. It's the silence. He's terrified that he'll never be loved by anyone ever again.
GeorgeHow can you be so sure? Who are you to him?
Lily (Projection)Because I've lived in that loneliness with him.
LilyWe were everything to each other. When I got the diagnosis, I left so he wouldn't have to watch me die. He thinks I'm a ghost. I actually survived, but by then, he'd already moved on with a new family. I didn't want to ruin that for him.
The darkness around them begins to tremble. Light floods the void, and for the first time, Steve's expression starts to change.
SteveLily? Is that... is that really you?
George feels it clearly now. The betrayal of his current family isn't the end of the story. There is a deep, unfinished love waiting for him. Lily is the reason Steve needs to keep breathing.
