George:
Steve, why are you hiding in the dark? Why have you shut everything out?
Steve:
Because I'm terrified.
George:
Terrified of what, Steve?
A sudden crack of light cuts through the dark. A woman's silhouette—Lily—appears in the doorway.
Lily (Projection):
It's not death he's scared of. It's the silence. He's terrified that he'll never be loved by anyone ever again.
George:
How can you be so sure? Who are you to him?
Lily (Projection):
Because I've lived in that loneliness with him.
Lily:
We were everything to each other. When I got the diagnosis, I left so he wouldn't have to watch me die. He thinks I'm a ghost. I actually survived, but by then, he'd already moved on with a new family. I didn't want to ruin that for him.
Steve:
Lily? Is that... is that really you?
George feels it clearly now. The betrayal of his current family isn't the end of the story. There is a deep, unfinished love waiting for him. Lily is the reason Steve needs to keep breathing.
